With every day that passes, Roy Halladay begins to sound more and more like an ex-Blue Jay.
Halladay talked frankly again Tuesday, before going out to start the All Star Game, about the future. And he gave off the impression he was less convinced than ever that the Blue Jays are close enough to winning in the near future to convince him to stay.
Asked how he felt about the direction of the franchise, considering how much he has said he liked it in Toronto, Halladay gave this reply:
“Yeah, I do [like it]. I think we have a lot of great pieces. But the tough part is to be in a tough division. I think sometimes you do think you have enough guys to make a run. But if we lose one or two, it’s just been frustrating in the past couple of years that we haven’t been able to go out and get those couple of extra guys. …
“So everything has to go right. You need guys to play to their potential. And you need two or three guys, that you don’t expect, to step up.”

The Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors, living up to the wild tenor of the past few weeks in the NBA, have hatched a complicated sign-and-trade arrangement that went through numerous constructions Wednesday before resulting in an agreement in principle that will send Shawn Marion to Dallas and also absorb the Raptors’ much-anticipated signing of Hedo Turkoglu.
Sources close to the negotiations told ESPN.com on Wednesday night a trade call has been scheduled with the league office for Thursday, indicating all sides have agreed to the terms of a transaction that, in its final form, will also involve the Memphis Grizzlies and the Orlando Magic.

A new core is quickly taking shape for the Toronto Raptors, who locked up centre Andrea Bargnani to a US$50-million, five-year deal Wednesday and are close to finalizing a contract with free agent forward Hedo Turkolgu.
Along with point guard Jose Calderon, already under contract through 2012-13, and DeMar DeRozan, a swingman taken ninth overall in last month’s draft, general manager Bryan Colangelo is convinced he’s laid the foundation for a contender in the NBA’s increasingly strong Eastern Conference in the coming seasons.

After spending his entire 13-year career in Montreal, Saku Koivu will be calling Orange County his home as the Anaheim Ducks have signed the free agent centre to a one-year, $3.25 million contract.
Koivu, 34, had been the Canadiens’ second-longest serving captain. His nine seasons with the ‘C’ trailed only the legendary Jean Beliveau, who was captain for 10 seasons.
The move to Anaheim reunites Koivu with fellow countryman Teemu Selanne. The duo helped Finland earn a silver medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

The CFL may not be all that thrilled with Arland Bruce’s tribute to Michael Jackson in the Argos’ 30-17 win in Hamilton.
The league is reviewing the Toronto receiver’s TD celebration Wednesday night.
Following a TD pass from Kerry Joseph that put Toronto ahead 6-0, Bruce removed his helmet, shoulder pads and uniform top and laid down in the end zone. Bruce said he was honoring the memory of Michael Jackson by pretending to be buried.

Nikolai Khabibulin is the latest big name off the board in free agency, as the veteran netminder has signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
The 36-year-old spent the past four seasons in Chicago, helping lead the Blackhawks to their first Western Conference final since 1995 this past season. He also captured the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004.
The signing marks the end of a tumultuous time in the Windy City for the Russian native. After signing a massive four-year deal with the Hawks in 2005, Khabibulin suffered through various injuries and inconsistent play.
