After waiting out a nagging injury, Argos WR P.K. Sam seems ready to make his 2009 debut Friday night against the Calgary Stampeders. The only question left is who is more excited about his return to the lineup – Sam or the Argos brass. The Argos coaching staff is hoping that Sam can add both size and smarts to a receiving corps that has seen its fair share of personnel changes in the first seven weeks of the season.
“He is a big target and he runs good routes,” said Head Coach Bart Andrus. “He is a receiver that can bring a lot to our offence and I think he will bring us some extra awareness, extra experience and I am excited to see him play.”
Andrus and his staff have good reason to be hopeful that Sam can add a new dimension to their offence based on his late-season performance in 2008. The Florida State product was arguably the Boatmen’s most productive offensive weapon in the final third of the ’08 season, generating 36 receptions for 499 yards and three touchdowns in only six games after first joining the club in September.

Blue Jays rookie Travis Snider laid off two pitches just outside the strike zone from Angels reliever Rafael Rodriguez before golfing a low fastball on the outside corner over the wall in left-center field.
Snider broke into a home run trot for the second time in six games, going 3-for-3 with a walk on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays knew Snider, the organization’s top prospect heading into this season, had power potential, but for Snider — and for manager Cito Gaston — the home run was just one of many positives to take away from Sunday’s tilt.

Travis Snider stepped into the batter’s box in the third inning of Tuesday night’s 10-9 loss, settling in to face Red Sox ace Josh Beckett in his first at-bat for the Blue Jays in three months. Five pitches in, the rookie showed off his powerful swing, launching a pitch over the wall in left for a solo home run.
With that, Snider was officially back after a tour with Triple-A Las Vegas to rediscover his swing and refine his approach. The young outfielder began the season as Toronto’s Opening Day left fielder, but he admittedly began piling too much pressure on himself and said the stay in the Minors helped him put things in perspective.

As far as Hockey Canada is concerned, the whole issue of insurance for the biggest names in the frozen game ranks as an item on the to-do list with a giant check mark beside it.
Even if the National Hockey League and the Players’Association see the degree of insurance coverage–or lack thereof –as a problem with grave potential should a player take a slapshot in the foot, tweak a hamstring or take a stick in the eye at a camp designed to prepare for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
“Everything is fine,” soothed Johnny Misley, vice-president of hockey operations for Hockey Canada. “We have secured insurance to help protect the players–given the low risk there is–to give them peace of mind.”
Peace of mind does not exactly describe the mind-set of the NHL or NHLPA –at least judging by public comments in recent weeks regarding financial protection for Olympic prospects and their employers.
