The Big Swede, Mats Sundin retires

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 30th September 2009

Mats Sundin hung up his blades today, never having fulfilled his dream of bringing a Stanley Cup to Toronto.

But it certainly was fun watching him try, wasn’t it?

For 13 seasons the big Swede was the face of the Leaf franchise, registering more goals (420) and points (987) than any other player in team history. Only fellow countryman Borje Salming had more assists.

Yet critics always pointed to the fact that Sundin was never able to lead Toronto to an appearance in the final, something that frustrated the smooth-skating centre over the years. It is a significant blemish on his resume that cannot be ignored.

But that’s not how he should be remembered in Toronto.

Purcey passes Jays’ audition

Posted by GameSetMatch on 22nd September 2009

The Blue Jays have been waiting a long time for David Purcey to realize his potential. The big lefty showed flashes of his ability on the mound last season and was trusted with a spot in the club’s rotation when this year began.

On Monday night, Purcey helped lead the Blue Jays to a 9-2 victory over the Orioles at Rogers Centre, but it was a win that was a long time coming for the pitcher. The win was Purcey’s first in more than a year for Toronto — a drought that Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston did not expect.

“I didn’t think so,” Gaston said. “He’s still a kid, too, I guess.”

At 27 years old and with enough Major League service time to no longer be considered a rookie, Purcey is hardly a kid anymore. He was supposed to be a fixture in Toronto’s staff this year — rather that someone who needed another four months of seasoning on the farm with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Snider leads Jays’ homer charge

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th September 2009

The field was littered with equipment. A handful of helmets and bats were scattered in the grass down the first-base line at Yankee Stadium, and in the dirt behind home plate, the chest protector belonging to Blue Jays catcher Rod Barajas was abandoned.

A few minutes earlier, New York’s Shelley Duncan was gripping the straps of that chest guard, pulling Barajas out from the bottom of a dogpile during a heated altercation between the Jays and Yankees during the eighth inning of Toronto’s 10-4 victory on Tuesday night.

The late-inning eruption — ignited when Yankees catcher Jorge Posada took exception to a very wild pitch from reliever Jesse Carlson — overshadowed a game filled with positives for the Blue Jays. Toronto matched a season high with five home runs, including two from rookie Travis Snider, and ace Roy Halladay was effective in earning his 15th win of the year.

Canucks Sign Luongo to 12-Year Contract Extension

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 2nd September 2009

Roberto Luongo will be between the pipes in Vancouver for the foreseeable future.

On Wednesday, the Canucks announced that they have signed their star goalie to a 12-year contract extension.

Luongo had originally set a deadline of Sept. 13 to complete the deal.

“We’re trying to get it done before (training) camp,” Luongo said last week in Calgary during the National Team Orientation camp. “If it doesn’t happen before camp, I will not be negotiating during the season. I don’t want to have that distraction,” he said.

Pacman Agrees to Play in Canada

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 1st September 2009

If controversial cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones is going to return to the NFL, it will be via the Canadian Football League. Jones agreed in principle to a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers late Monday night and is expected to join the team as early as Wednesday.

“It’ll be a good experience for me to get back in game shape and compete and play football, which I like to do,” Jones told SI.com. “I’m real happy for the opportunity that’s been given to me. Of course it’s disappointing to me to not be playing in the NFL. But things happen and you have to adjust. ”
The issue with Jones, who turns 26 on Sept. 30, has never been physical skills; it has been off-the-field incidents. He was suspended for the 2007 season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, and last year after being traded from Tennessee to Dallas he was suspended for four games following an altercation with a team-employed bodyguard.
