Before they joined the Ottawa Senators in the Dany Heatley trade, Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek knew only one National Hockey League team: the San Jose Sharks.
So it was not without a little nervousness that the two of them touched down in California on Sunday, almost three months after the trade. They don’t know what awaits them, how they will be greeted and how they in turn will react. It’s always tough to go home.
Both were drafted by the Sharks — Cheechoo in 1998 (second round, 29th overall), Michalek in 2003 (first round, sixth overall) — and had their most productive seasons, so far, in San Jose. Cheechoo led the league in goals with 56 in 2005-06, while Michalek had a career high 26 goals and 40 assists in 2006-07.
On the personal side, both still own houses in San Jose and plan to keep them (at least until the real-estate market gets considerably better), and Cheechoo’s wife, Ashley, is from San Jose.
Both players are looking forward to Tuesday’s game, even if they know there’s danger in getting too pumped up.

While it lacked the fireworks of many previous skirmishes fought on the battleground, the Senators were just happy to get their first win of the young season.
Led by 26 saves from goalie Pascal Leclaire, the Senators beat the Maple Leafs 2-1 — the first win for Leclaire in a Senators uniform.
“The first one is one I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” said Leclaire, who hadn’t won a game since Nov. 14, 2008. “You don’t feel part of a team until you have a win when you’re a goalie. It’s been a while and it’s a pretty fun night for me.”
There was plenty of hype around the decision by Toronto coach Ron Wilson to start goalie Jonas “The Monster” Gustavasson, but Daniel Alfredsson, on a penalty shot, and Shean Donovan scored for the Senators.

The Senators will on Friday announce which player will inherit Dany Heatley’s abandoned ‘A’, and most would guess it winds up on the front of jersey No. 12.
But this is no slam-dunk for coach Cory Clouston.
Yes, Mike Fisher is the obvious choice to be an alternate captain. He’s a hard-working, clean-living, deep-thinking, well-spoken veteran.
He’s the Senators’ poster child.
If Fisher doesn’t get the ‘A’, it might very well be because he’s too good for it.

The Ottawa Senators carry high expectations into every season.
That’s just the way it is in the nation’s capital, where even the prime minister is more interested in hockey than just about anything else. The adventures of the local heroes bring daily joy or consternation.
No one feels this more acutely than general manager Bryan Murray. He’s either getting a pat on the back, or or a knife in it.
After a year in which another coach got fired, the team missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons, and the team’s star goal scorer demanded a trade, Murray’s hoping this season allows him to show his face in public a little more without getting a pie thrown at it.
On the eve of the season, he sat down with The Citizen to talk about a number of issues. Here is an edited version of that conversation.

The first thing you should know is that the Dany Heatley trade to Edmonton is not officially dead. At least not yet.
It’s true that Dany Heatley did not waive his no-movement clause when requested by the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, but that isn’t to say it’s not still possible for him to waive it on Wednesday. He has, technically speaking, not issued an outright refusal to move.

Dany Heatley could be traded before July 1, but it’s going to take a significant offer from the New York Rangers or the Edmonton Oilers — the two clubs seemingly most interested in the goal-scoring winger – to get it done.
Sources say the Ottawa Senators do not have a trade offer from those teams, or anyone else, that is deemed worth of acceptance and the list of suitors looks as though it’s getting shorter rather than longer. The St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings appear to have pulled out of the sweepstakes, leaving the Rangers, Oilers and Sharks as considerations.
